Working at my dad's garage for smeotime I've come to know that one of the hardest stains to remove from my hand is an oil stain. At the end of the day I would go wash up with a heavy duty soap used by mechanics. No matter how hard I tried there would still be a little bit of oil left. But again my clean hand still stayed clean. I didn't succeed in cleaning my other dirty hand, but you know what? There would always be less oil on it than before I started. To fully answer you're question I would need to know what your definitions of success and failure are. Life's a two way street. No matter how hard I try to help someone, if that person is not willingly to help themselves then they won't become better. But like the oil stain I talked about, the situation they were in won't be as bad as it was. And that to me is success.
